Using 19th Century Civil Records in French Departmental Archives To

Research your Alsace-Lorraine Ancestors

Presented by Bob Greiner

Beginning in 1792 the French Republic began keeping civil records of births, marriages, and deaths. These records were maintained at the village (commune) level. The records typically contain more detailed information about a person than the equivalent church records.

Today these records are preserved in the archives of each French Department. Many of those archives have digitized the older records and they are available to search online. The records of the Alsace-Lorraine region of northeastern France are unique in that much of the population was originally German and these records can be written in German and/or French, depending on the time period.

This webinar will show you how to find these online records and use these websites.
